Tiger Woods will make a rare early-season appearance when he tees it up in next month’s Frys.com Open.

The 39-year-old rarely plays in any of the early PGA Tour events as he recovers from the exertions of a busy summer in the majors and the end-of-season FedEx Cup play-offs.

But, after missing so much of the season, and having failed to qualify for the play-offs, he will line up at Silverado Country Club in California on October 15.

The former world number one is currently ranked 272nd in the standings after a miserable couple of years in which his fitness and form have let him down.

But there were signs towards the end of the regular PGA Tour campaign that the 14-time major winner was starting to find his touch and a share of 10th place at the Wyndham Championship was his best result all year.

There is another reason why the Florida resident has agreed to play, however, as he owes the PGA Tour a favour, after being given special dispensation to play in the European Tour’s Turkish Airlines Open back in 2013 – something termed a ‘Conflicting Event Release’.

In exchange for getting the all clear to play in Europe for a hefty appearance fee, Woods, along with Rory McIlroy, agreed to play in the Frys.com Open at some point.

The duo will both feature in the tournament, giving organisers a real boost for what is usually a low-key event stateside.
