Sergio Garcia was quick to criticise the playing surface at Chambers Bay following his opening round 70 on Thursday.

Before the start of the US Open, a number of players had complained about the quality of the greens at the public course in the state of Washington.

The veteran Colin Montgomerie was one of them who claimed the greens were “extremely poor” but he did manage to hit a one-under 69.

The Chambers Bay course was only opened in 2007 and was formerly a sand and gravel mine and Garcia has claimed the greens are as bad as they look.

He said on Twitter: “A championship of the calibre of the US Open deserves better quality green surfaces.

“If my problem is saying what everyone thinks but they don’t have the guts to say it, then I’m guilty of that for sure.”

World number one Rory McIlroy, who finished with a two-over 72 was also quick to slam the quality of the greens.

“They are not the best I have putted on,” he said.
