Jim Furyk will miss this year’s Masters after being told he needs surgery to correct a persistent wrist injury.
The American has not played competitively since being forced to withdraw from the first round of the BMW Championship in September after sustaining damage to his left wrist.
The 45-year-old had hoped to be back for the start of this year but his recovery has not been as straightforward as had been expected, prompting the former US Open champion to go under the knife to correct the issue.
Furyk believes it will take three months to recover from the procedure, meaning he will miss the first major of the year at Augusta, but is confident of getting back up to speed quickly when he does make his comeback in May.
“While I am disappointed that the wrist has not yet healed sufficiently for me to return to play, I am confident that the surgery at this point is the best course of action, and will get me back in the shortest possible time,” Furyk said in a statement.
“This has been frustrating for me to this point, but I am focusing on an aggressive rehabilitation program and having a strong year once I am sufficiently healed.”
