Dustin Johnson is set to return to action at this week’s Wells Fargo Championship after being absent for a month with a back injury.
The 32-year-old world number one was in dominant form going into last month’s Masters at Augusta National having won successive tournaments at the Genesis Open, the WGC-Mexico Championship and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match play.
However, Johnson had to withdraw from the first major tournament of 2017 after he injured his back the day before it was due to start when he fell down a short flight of stairs at the house he was renting.
He has since spent four weeks resting his back and elbow, which was also badly bruised during his fall, and is now ready to return to the fold at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington.
Confirming Johnson’s participation, Wells Fargo Championship executive director Kym Hougham said: “We certainly are excited that Dustin will be joining us in Wilmington.
“More importantly, we are glad that he is OK and will be returning to the PGA Tour.”
Meanwhile Johnson recently confirmed that he has suffered no ill-effects from his injury since returning to play some practice rounds.
He told the Huffington Post: “I was hitting the ball better today than I was when I injured myself, so that was a lot of fun. The back’s feeling a lot better.”
