Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie has revealed winning the Senior Open is his number one target this season.

Montgomerie, who failed to win a major championship before switching over to the Senior Tour, has only recently returned to action after three months out with a serious ankle ligament injury but his sights are already set on picking up a trophy.

The 53-year-old has clinched three senior major titles, having won the PGA Championship in 2014 and 2015 whilst the US Open was also added to the collection three years ago at Oak Tree National.

However, the five-time Ryder Cup winner is still yet to get his name on the Senior Open trophy and this is something he wants to change when the tournament gets underway at Royal Porthcawl at the end of July.

“Having been second in The Open at St Andrews and second in the Senior Open at Royal Porthcawl, I would love to go one better,” Montgomerie was quoted as saying by bunkered.co.uk. “It is right on my radar ? my No.1 target and the most important event on my calendar ? and I am looking forward to it.”

Royal Porthcawl will be hosting the coveted event for the first time since 2014 and Bernhard Langer will be hoping for a repeat of the performance that saw him ease to a 13-shot victory three years ago.

Englishman Paul Broadhurst will be the defending champion this year after picking up the title at Carnoustie in 2016 on his debut in the event.
