Danny Willett has triumphed in the Omega European Masters after he carded a bogey-free round of 65 on the final day.
The Englishman went into his final round in a share of the lead with compatriot Matt Fitzpatrick, but he secured a one-shot victory after he carded a round of 65 to finish on 17-under-par for the tournament.
The success was the 27-year-old’s third triumph on the European Tour following his victories in the BMW International Open in 2012 and the Nedbank Golf Challenge last year and it continued his good run of form after he finished in sixth position at The Open championship earlier this month.
Three consecutive birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th holes followed by three straight pars helped secure victory for Willett and afterwards he revealed that his calm approach had been decisive in sealing victory.
He said: “I kept very, very calm all day. I just waited for the right things to happen to get on a run.”
Youngster Fitzpatrick had held a one-shot lead of his own at the turn as he chased his maiden success on the European Tour and Willett acknowledged that the 20-year-old had kept him on his toes throughout the final round.
He continued: “Fitzpatrick played some great golf and kept the pressure on. When someone is right on your heels you know you can’t let up.”
It was a good day all round for English players as Tyrrell Hatton shot a 62 to card the round of the day and finish in third position on 15-under-par.
