Retief Goosen produced a bogey-free 63 to join Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa on -8 to share the lead in the Quicken Loans National.
Goosen appears to have found a touch of form in recent weeks and he produced some superb shots to share the lead in Virginia.
He was not alone, though, as Ishikawa hit five birdies on the front nine before picking up a hole-in-one on the fourth.
Ernie Els, Justin Leonard and Kevin Chappell are just one shot further back, while Tiger Woods is five shots off the lead.
The former world number one hit four birdies in a row to recover from a bad start and he is confident his game is finally coming together at the right time.
He said: “That’s what scoring is all about.
“I made a lot of key putts today. I ran them by the hole but I made all the comebacks. Overall I felt like I hit the ball well enough to turn it around. It was nice to actually turn it around.”
