David Horsey has played down talk of qualifying for the Ryder Cup as he is just staying focused on his Russian Open title defence.
The 30-year-old Englishman has enjoyed a decent year with four European Tour victories to date, while he heads to the Skolkovo Golf Club looking to defend the title he secured in a play-off at the Tseleevo Golf Club 12 months ago.
Horsey will be looking to bounce back from missing the cut at last week’s Czech Masters, while he also knows that the tournament in Russia marks the start of qualification for Europe captain Darren Clarke’s Ryder Cup team to go to Hazeltine in the United States next year.
But rather than get bogged down with thoughts of trying to force his way into the team to face the Americans, Horsey is just concentrating on winning his next tournament.
“I just want to keep playing well. I’m not really thinking about it being the start of the Ryder Cup race at all,” he said.
“I just want to turn up every week and try and compete every week, do my own thing and get my preparation done and try to win.
“It is always great to come back and defend a title, even if it is a different golf course.”
