Defending champion Billy Horschel admits he is in the last chance saloon as he attempts to qualify for the Tour Championship.
The 28-year-old won the PGA Tour’s lucrative FedEx Cup last year after an amazing run of form over the final two play-off events.
He won this week’s BMW Championship 12 months ago – the penultimate play-off event – before repeating the feat in the season finale, when only the top 30 in the standings fight it out for the $10m bonus pot.
The Florida resident is currently 67th on the FedEx points list and has just squeezed into the 70-man field for this week’s tournament at Lake Forest.
Horschel has not enjoyed the best of times in 2015 with just a couple of top-10 finishes to his name, while he has not finished inside the top 25 since claiming a share of eighth at the FedEx St Jude Classic in mid-June.
And the former Walker Cup ace knows that he must rediscover his touch in Illinois otherwise it will be time to hit the gym.
“I want to get there (Tour Championship) but, at the same time, I’ve put myself in a predicament by not playing well and taking care of business,” he said.
“It is what it is. I either play well and go to East Lake, or I go home and start my off-season work-out program.”
The American faces a tough task, however, with red-hot Jason Day set to tee it up once more along with world numbers one and two Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth.
