The United States secured a dramatic 15.5 to 14.5 victory over their International counterparts in the Presidents Cup.
It is the sixth straight triumph in the event for the Americans, who went into Sunday’s singles matches with a one-point lead in what proved to be the closest tournament since the trophy was shared in 2003.
The US were always in control however and never once fell behind during the final day with Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Chris Kirk, Zach Johnson and Bill Haas all claiming victories.
Indeed it was Haas, son of captain Jay, who secured the winning point for the US in the final match of the day at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea as he beat Bae Sang-moon.
After the event, Haas senior confirmed his delight at the fairy-tale ending and he revealed the words of encouragement he gave his son on what proved to be a special day for the family in South Korea.
He said: I told him, “Come on, win one for your mom, your mom deserves this. We put him out 12th and had no idea this was going to happen. Couldn’t even have dreamt this.”
The US certainly didn’t have it all their own way in Incheon however with the International side equalling their score of six points on the final day.
South African Branden Grace was the star of the show for Nick Price’s side as he secured a maximum return of five points over the course of the four days and he was the only player on either side to achieve that feat.
