Rory McIlroy is hoping to rediscover his golden touch and kick off the new PGA Tour season with victory in the Frys.com Open.
It has been less than a month since Jordan Spieth won the Tour Championship at East Lake to end the 2014/15 campaign, with the success helping the American lift the FedEx Cup and return to number one in the world.
McIlroy managed to finish in a tie for 16th in Atlanta but the Northern Irishman never really looked capable of challenging Spieth, who was supreme throughout the tournament.
The four-time major winner has struggled since he damaged his ankle ligaments in July, an injury that has severely hampered the County Down-born player, limiting his ability on the course.
The slight break since the end of the PGA season appears to have done McIlroy some good though and he is now fully focused on getting back to his best and challenging for titles.
“Since I’ve come back from the injury, I’ve had a couple of good finishes but not really been in contention,” he said. “So I want to get back into contention, have chances to win tournaments.”
McIlroy will be playing alongside Englishman Justin Rose for the first two days of the event at Silverado as both Europeans aims to start the new American season with a bang.
