Kuchar happy with opening round

American Matt Kuchar ended the first round of the Fiji International tied for second place after hitting a two-over-par 74.

Kuchar finished the day tied for second, along with Daniel Nisbet, Nick Cullen, Alistair Presnell and RJ Caracella.

New Zealand’s Josh Geary tops the leaderboard after carding an even-par 72 to sit two shots ahead of the chasing pack.

The American arrived at the Pacific Island tournament straight from South Korea having played for the USA team at the Presidents Cup, and hit three birdies and five bogeys in blustery conditions.

The 37 year-old admitted it was tough going with the weather but believes he did his best to survive and remain in the mix going forward.

Kuchar said afterwards: “It was purely about survival out there.”
