Rory McIlroy is quietly confident that his form is good enough to win this week’s DP World Tour Championship and the Race to Dubai.
The Northern Irishman tops the European Tour’s money list heading into the season finale and is one of seven players who can still scoop the bonus pot on offer.
England’s Danny Willett is close behind, followed by compatriot Justin Rose, with Ireland’s Shane Lowry, Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace of South Africa plus South Korea’s Byeong Hun An all in with a shout of glory.
Victory for Willett would see him crowned Race to Dubai champion, while Rose needs to win and see McIlroy finish down the field to emerge on top after a long season worldwide.
The remaining quartet have only an outside chance as they are a long way behind McIlroy in the standings and would need him to implode at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
But the four-time major winner has no intention of doing that and is relishing the challenge in the UAE.
“If I go out and win the tournament, I win the overall thing no matter what anybody else does, and that’s a nice position to be in,” he said. “Obviously that’s the main objective this week, and I feel like I’m playing well enough to do that.”
