Shane Lowry admits he cannot wait to play in January’s EurAsia Cup and hopes it will help him gain a place in the Ryder Cup.
The Irishman was one of 10 European stars to qualify for Darren Clarke’s team via their place in the final Race to Dubai standings, with Kristoffer Broberg, Victor Dubuisson, Ross Fisher, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Soren Kjeldsen, Andy Sullivan, Bernd Wiesberger, Danny Willett and Chris Wood also on board.
Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson opted not to take up the invitation to play and captain Clarke will name his two picks at a later date.
The trophy was shared in March 2014 when the inaugural tournament ended up as a 10-10 tie and Asia captain Jeev Milkha Singh will announce his dozen soon.
The tournament takes place at Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in Selangor, Malaysia between January 15–17 and Lowry, who claimed the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational earlier this year, hopes to get a taste of team golf, with next year’s Hazeltine showpiece already on his mind.
“It’s definitely a good breeding ground to get a bit of experience for the Ryder Cup,” he said. “It’s going to be a good tournament and I just hope it gives me the experience I need to kick on and make that Ryder Cup team next year.”
