Henrik Stenson shot a six-under-par 66 to sit joint-top at the Nedbank Golf Challenge after the opening round in Sun City.
The Swede was in impressive form on the front nine and managed to birdie five holes before reaching the turn and it looked like he was on the verge of building a big lead.
However, it was tougher on the way back to the clubhouse although the 39-year-old was able to pick up one more shot to finish the first 18 holes without making a bogey.
The nine-time European Tour winner, who has not tasted success since clinching the DP World Tour Championship last year, is in prime position heading into Friday, but he has been matched by home favourite Jaco van Zyl.
South Africa’s star also did not drop any strokes and six birdies have put him in contention for a maiden European Tour title.
Danny Willet, who is continuing his fantastic year, is alone in third position after the Englishman signed for a five-under-par 67 to sit one shot off the pace.
Australia’s Marc Leishman and South African Branden Grace are in a share of fourth after both players carded rounds of 68.
Ross Fisher and Matthew Fitzpatrick were in good form on day one and the duo are three off the overnight leaders after scores of 69.
