Francesco Molinari has revealed his delight that Italy has been announced as the host for the 2022 Ryder Cup.
The Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome will host the prestigious event, with the Italian bid winning out against the likes of Spain, Austria and Germany and will become only the third venue to host the tournament on mainland Europe.
Home favourite Molinari, who was part of the winning European Ryder Cup teams of 2010 and 2012, believes it is fantastic that the competition will be heading to the Italian capital, and he hopes to be part of the team when the tournament takes place.
He said: “I would say it almost doubles the motivation to be there [in 2022]. I was just counting this morning that I’d be 40 in 2022, so I need to first of all keep in good shape and then you never know.
“It would be obviously amazing to be part of it as a player, but otherwise it would be amazing to be part of it in any other capacity.”
The 33-year-old believes the course will be able to cope with the rigours of hosting the four-day event and he believes the historic city will act as the perfect backdrop for the tournament.
He continued: “The course is going to be great but so is the setting with the city and everything, so it’s a great chance for Italy and for the Ryder Cup to showcase one of the great European cities.”
Europe have an impressive record in recent Ryder Cups, as they have won six of the last seven events, with their last defeat on home soil coming at the Belfry in 1993.
