Fabian Gomez said he was delighted to have come through a tense play-off and clinch the Sony Open title in Hawaii.
The Argentine, who started the final round four shots off the lead, produced a stunning performance to climb 14 places up the leaderboard and into a share of the lead.
He made 10 birdies – with seven consecutive shots being picked up from the sixth to the 12th – and the 37-year-old made a crucial putt at the 18th to card an eight-under 62 and take his overall score to -20.
Brandt Snedeker, who was joint-overnight leader after day three, also made a huge clutch putt at the last to save par and force a two-man play-off after signing for a four-under 66.
The pair couldn’t be separated when they headed back to the 18th, with both making pars, and they once again had to make the walk back to the tee-box to settle the score.
Gomez managed to make a birdie at the second time of asking and victory was confirmed when Snedeker could only record a par, giving the Argentine his second PGA Tour title.
The champion was delighted to have got over the line and produce such a good performance having been under severe pressure all day.
He said: “I’m really, really happy. I felt good all week long and was able to put on a great round.”
Englishman Greg Owen will be happy with his display and the 43-year-old ended up in a tie for fifth, alongside American Kevin Kisner, on -15.
