Rory McIlroy has confirmed he won’t be making the trip to Rio for the 2016 Olympics due to concerns about the Zika virus.
The Northern Irishman was set to represent Ireland at the event in Brazil but the 27-year-old confirmed on Wednesday that he will not be heading to South American due to the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which has been linked to brain defects in newborn babies.
McIlroy had admitted it was a tough decision but he is not willing to take the risk and will instead be able to focus on the remaining 2016 majors and the Ryder Cup.
Speaking about his decision, he said: “Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take.
“I trust the Irish people will understand my decision.
“The unwavering support I receive every time I compete in a golf tournament at home or abroad means the world to me.
“I will continue to endeavour to make my fans and fans of golf proud with my play on the course and my actions off it.”
