International Golf Federation president Peter Dawson has announced that Jordan Spieth will miss this summer’s Olympic Games.
The former world number one was one of very few big names still intending to play but Dawson confirmed his decision on Monday.
The world’s top golfers – Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Spieth and Rory McIlroy – will now not compete in Brazil over health fears connected to the Zika virus.
Spieth’s withdrawal comes just days before The Open at Royal Troon, with Matt Kuchar now set to take his place in the USA team.
Kuchar looks set to be joined by Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed after the latter confirmed his intention to play on Sunday after the Scottish Open.
