Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn made history on Sunday as she won the Women’s British Open thanks to a final round of 72.

The 20-year-old went into the last day as the leader and survived a late scare to becomes Thailand’s first ever Major winner in golf.

She stretched her lead early on after South Korea’s Mirim Lee made crucial errors during the first five holes.

However, the challenger bounced back after the 10th hole with three straight birdies, while Jutanugarn double-bogeyed the 13th.

Despite being under pressure, she kept her composure through to the last, and is now hoping to inspire the next generation of golfers.

She told BBC Sport: “For me it was hard today. I felt a little bit nervous at times. My mother cried at the end. She said thank you, and that made my day. I think this victory is really important for me and Thai golf. I hope I can inspire some players in Thailand.”

Jutanugarn eventually finished on 16-under par, three shots in front of Mo Martin and Lee, while America’s Stacy Lewis finished five shots off the pace in fourth.
