Russell Knox placed himself firmly into Ryder Cup contention by winning the Travelers Championship on Sunday.

The Scot began the final day at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut three back but produced a battling final round of 68 to claim a one shot victory on 14-under.

Overnight leader Daniel Berger looked on course for glory, only for a run of four straight bogeys from the 10th to see him plummet down the leaderboard.

Veteran Jerry Kelly carded a final round of 64 to set the clubhouse total at 13-under and that was enough to give him second ahead of Justin Thomas and Patrick Rodgers.

Earlier in the day, Jim Furyk had made history by becoming the first player on the PGA Tour to card a 58 and he eventually finished in a tie for fifth.

The day belonged to Knox, however, and the victory has catapulted him up the European Ryder Cup standings and he may now be in contention for a wildcard pick.

The 31-year-old admitted his victory has come in timely fashion and is hopeful that he has now forced himself into European captain Darren Clarke?s thinking.

“I thought about it on the last tee to be honest,” Knox said. “I knew by winning this tournament, it’s put Darren Clarke in a very difficult position not to pick me.

“I think – but I mean, it’s his decision. If I don’t make the team, I can’t think I’m worthy of a pick. It’s his decision.”
