Defending champion Justin Thomas has made a good start at the CIMB Classic, enjoying a “stress-free day” to hold a share of the lead.
Three men sit at the top of the leaderboard after the first day in Kuala Lumpur, with Thomas alongside Derek Fathauer and Keegan Bradley on -8 after rounds of 65.
Thomas was consistent throughout and admitted afterwards it had been a very comfortable round for him at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, as everything had gone to plan.
“It was a good day, it was solid,” Thomas said. “If there’s any such thing as an easy eight under, that was it. I hit it real close and made a few putts, so it was a pretty low-stress day.”
Englishman Paul Casey is just one shot behind after an opening-round 65, which he finished in some style as he birdied four of his final five holes, while Anirban Lahiri sits two strokes off the pace after finishing on six-under after a 66.
Sergio Garcia is among a four-man group a further shot back, while Ian Poulter fired an opening-round 71 upon his return to PGA Tour action from the foot injury that kept him out of the Ryder Cup recently.
