Thomas hangs on in Hawaii

American Justin Thomas came through a final day battle with Hideki Matsuyama to win the SBS Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

The three-shot victory was Thomas’ third PGA Tour title, but he was made to work for it after suffering a scare down the back nine as Matsuyama closed in.

Matsuyama looked like clawing him back when he chipped in for an eagle two on the 14th, and the alarm bells really started to ring as Thomas then double-bogeyed the par 5.

However Thomas regained his composure to finish strongly when picking up birdies at the final two holes to card a four-under-par 69 to get his hands on his second trophy in the last three tournaments.

Speaking afterwards Thomas, who took a two-shot lead into the final day, admitted it was a bit more nervy than he wanted but was just relieved to get the job done.

“I stumbled more than I wanted to but it shows where my game is at,” he said. “I stuck it out and got the win.”

Jordan Spieth carded the round of the day with eight birdies in a bogey-free 65 which helped him surge up the leaderboard and take a share of third with Pat Perez and Ryan Moore on 16 under.

Dustin Johnson was a shot further back while world number one Jason Day finished with an eagle to close on 13 under.
