World number 28 Sergio Garcia says it “means a lot” after he became the all-time leading points scorer in Ryder Cup history.

Thomas Bjorn was criticised for choosing Garcia as one of his four captain’s picks for the prestigious event at Le Golf National, but the skipper’s selection was vindicated as the Spaniard won three of his four matches as Europe regained the cup with a 17.5-10.5 victory.

Drawn against Rickie Fowler in Sunday’s singles, the 38-year-old from Borriol picked up a hard-fought 2&1 victory as he became the all-time leading points scorer in Ryder Cup history on 25.5 points, surpassing Nick Faldo’s tally of 25.

In a day of records, Italian Francesco Molinari defeated Phil Mickelson 4&2 as he became the first European – and just the second player ever – to win all five matches at the same Ryder Cup.

Reacting to the victory, and his new record, Garcia says it is special to have achieved so much in the biennial event although he insists team success always comes first.

“It means a lot but at the end of the day, I’ve always said it,” he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “It’s about the team and I’m happy that I was able to help. I’m happy that I was able to help with some of the points.

“It’s a bonus. It’s something that I never thought I would have the possibility of doing it, and now that it’s happened, you know, I’m just so happy. I mean, these guys are unbelievable.”
