Rory McIlroy has promised to repay Ernie Els for playing in the Irish Open by making an appearance in the South African Open.
Els was one of a number of stars who made the trip to the Emerald Isle for last week’s European Tour event and came away in a tie for 43rd after a blustery four days at Royal County Down.
McIlroy’s charity, the Rory Foundation, hosted the event and Els was only too happy to get on board and show his support.
The pair are good friends and McIlroy has already played in events to raise money for ‘Els for Autism’ – a charity close to the South African’s heart.
The South African Open is staged in January and does not usually attract a very strong field, with a few of the European stars being joined by a number of South Africans to make up the field.
But McIlroy has made a pledge to feature at Glendower Golf Club at some stage of his career.
“I’m definitely going down to South Africa one of the next couple of years to play in the SA Open with Ernie,” he said.
