Anyone who assumes that golf doesn’t change much from tournament to tournament just hasn’t watched enough of it! From course to course and pro to pro, the big tourneys always prove to be exciting viewing. You don’t have to be watching the all-time greats or be out on Pebble Beach to enjoy the biggest thrills and spills, either.
Golf is an extremely popular sport amongst bettors in the UK – many people also flock to big sites such as Fantasy Punter to make the most of the spectacle. However, if you’re new to the links, you might be wondering what the most popular tournaments and trophies actually are. Let’s take you through a handful of them below.
The British Open / The Open Championship
Keeping it on home soil to begin with, every British golfing fan needs to start with the British Open. This is the longest-standing major of them all and is therefore seen as the ‘Granddaddy’ of the big tournaments. It’s been running since 1860, and while there are many tourneys all over the world these days, there’s still an incredible draw for the original trophies (and that’s outside the UK, too).
The US Open
The US Open, of course, is never too far behind. This major actually started life around three decades or so after the British debuted in 1895. It takes in all manner of big and complex courses across the states, and it certainly has a reputation for being pretty difficult – a brilliant test for the world’s best, then! No wonder so many people love watching it.
The PGA Championship
No golfing fan with an interest in US links will be scratching their heads over this one – PGA tours absolutely dominate the American golfing calendar. It all culminates three weekends ahead of Labor Day, and with over a century of history in this championship, it’s widely seen as a gateway to further tourneys across the US. Winners are able to unlock access to lifetime PGA membership.
The Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup, of course, is just a little bit more special. This bi-annual tournament sees the best of the best in European golf face off against the top players in the US. It’s somewhat like an ultimate battle between who’s who in the sport – and it’s always fun to see who comes out on top. On the whole, the European team has the edge, or has done historically – but the best in US golf really do give as good as they get.
Golf is a varied and complex game that many people don’t really give it credit for being. What’s more, there are many different ways to bet on golf – from market variations to odds that can swing wildly across longer tournaments.
Whether you’re new to golf or are a big fan of some of the classic tours of years gone by, there’s always something exciting to look forward to in the calendar – start marking out your diary for 2022!
