Rickie Fowler insists his overall game is better heading into the 115th US Open at Chambers Bay on Thursday.
The American is yet to win one of the ‘big four’ events but he did finish in the top-five in all four major championships last year, something only Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus can claim to have done previously.
The 26-year-old was tied for fifth and third in the Masters and US PGA respectively while also clinching two runners-up positions in the other two competitions that make up golf’s Grand Slam.
Fowler, who has appeared in two Ryder Cup events for the USA, recently won The Players Championship after defeating Kevin Kisner and Sergio Garcia in a three-way play-off.
This victory came just days after the American was voted, alongside Ian Poulter, as the most overrated player on PGA Tour and Fowler insists the success has put him in better shape for a tilt at the US Open.
“It would be nice to put a major on the resume. Being in the winner’s circle just a few weeks back, I’d really like to have that chance here,” he said. “After my performance last year in the majors, I really felt like I belonged on the big stage.
“I proved that this is the kind of game I have. Taking care of business at The Players, that’s where I want to be. I want to be in contention and win golf tournaments.”
