Shane Lowry fired a final round of 66 to take a two-shot victory at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday.
The Irishman started the final day at Firestone Country Club three behind the leading duo of Justin Rose and Jim Furyk but carded four birdies, including one at the last, to reach 11-under and take his first title on American soil.
Rose and Furyk both struggled to two-over 72s to eventually finish in a tie for third and it was Bubba Watson who emerged as Lowry’s closest challenger in Akron, matching the winner’s 66 to end the tournament two adrift.
Elsewhere Robert Streb finished fifth on his own at six-under, while Henrik Stenson was part of a four-man tie for sixth.
The day belonged to Lowry though, with his win on Sunday granting him a three-year exemption on the PGA Tour.
After picking up the trophy the 28-year-old was almost speechless and thanked everyone who had helped him throughout his career.
“It’s hard to believe but I played good and hit the ball well,” said Lowry. “I was nervous but made a lot of good decisions and had a bit of luck as well.
“It’s great for me and everyone who has supported me over the years.”
